YUFUiNFO, designed by renowned architect Shigeru Ban, is a tourist information center located adjacent to JR Yufuin Station in Yufu City, Oita Prefecture, Japan. Completed in 2018, the center serves as a gateway for visitors, offering insights into local attractions and cultural experiences.
The architectural design of YUFUiNFO draws inspiration from ancient Egyptian papyrus columns, featuring Y-shaped laminated timber arches that create a harmonious and inviting atmosphere. The building’s fully glazed façade provides panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, including the iconic Mt. Yufu.
Inside, the first floor offers sightseeing information with views of the “Yufuin no Mori” express train, while a gently sloping ramp leads to the second-floor “Travel Library,” housing a collection of travel guides in a serene setting. An observation deck allows visitors to appreciate the natural beauty of the area.
The project was a collaborative effort involving several key partners:
- Structural Engineering: Hoshino Architectural & Structural Design Office
- Equipment Engineering: Chiku Engineering Consultants
- Lighting Design: Iwai Lumimedia Design
- Communication Design and Signage: Communication Design Laboratory
- Quantity Surveying: Futaba Quantity Surveyors
YUFUiNFO not only provides essential tourist information but also stands as an example of innovative architectural design, seamlessly blending functionality with aesthetic appeal.
