Boola Katitjin, designed by Lyons Architecture and built by Multiplex, is a landmark in sustainable education architecture, standing as Australia’s largest mass timber university building. Located at Murdoch University in Perth, the 18,000 sqm facility is constructed primarily from Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) and Glued Laminated Timber (Glulam), demonstrating the potential of engineered timber in large-scale academic environments.
The name “Boola Katitjin”, meaning “lots of learning” in the Noongar language, reflects the university’s commitment to First Nations culture and sustainability. The building’s design emphasizes biophilic principles, with exposed timber interiors creating a warm, natural atmosphere that enhances student well-being and engagement. The open-plan layout, abundant natural light, and passive ventilation strategies contribute to the project’s low-carbon footprint while promoting an interactive learning experience.
Structural engineering was led by Atelier Ten, ensuring the timber framework met rigorous fire, durability, and performance standards. The use of prefabricated timber components allowed for a fast, efficient, and low-impact construction process, aligning with the project’s sustainability goals. Boola Katitjin is targeting 5-Star Green Star certification, further solidifying its status as a leading example of environmentally responsible campus architecture.
By integrating mass timber with cutting-edge educational design, Boola Katitjin sets a new benchmark for sustainable learning environments, paving the way for future low-carbon university buildings in Australia and beyond.
