Bunjil Place, located in Narre Warren, Victoria, Australia, is a cultural and civic hub that showcases an innovative timber gridshell structure. Designed by the architectural firm FJC (Francis-Jones Carpenter), the building draws inspiration from the Aboriginal creator spirit Bunjil, often represented as an eagle, with the timber gridshell symbolizing Bunjil’s protective wings.
The structural engineering was managed by Taylor Thomson Whitting, ensuring the complex geometries of the timber design were both functional and aesthetically striking. Multiplex Australia served as the main contractor, overseeing the construction of this multifaceted project.
The timber gridshell was fabricated and installed by HESS TIMBER, utilizing advanced glulam techniques to achieve the intricate curved forms. Additional contributions came from Acoustic Studio, providing acoustic design; Murchie Consulting, handling building services engineering; and Steensen Varming, responsible for specialist lighting. Together, these collaborators brought to life a space that harmoniously blends cultural significance with contemporary architectural and engineering excellence.
