The Jindabyne Library and Community Centre, located in the Snowy Mountains of New South Wales, exemplifies innovative use of Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) in its construction. Designed by fjcstudio, the building rests on a stone plinth that reflects the local granite terrain, grounding it in its mountainous lakeside setting.
Above this base, an interlocked series of prefabricated CLT elements forms both the structure and interior finish, providing a warm and inviting atmosphere. The CLT panels were sourced from sustainable timber harvested from local forests affected by fire, emphasizing the project’s commitment to environmental responsibility.
Built served as the principal contractor, employing Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) to expedite the building process. This approach included off-site fabrication of the CLT components, which were then assembled on-site, allowing the structure to be erected in just two weeks. The project, from initial engagement to completion, spanned under ten months between 2021 and 2022, showcasing a rapid and efficient construction timeline. This carbon-neutral facility not only serves as a community hub but also stands as a testament to sustainable design and innovative building practices in regional Australia.
