World of Volvo is an iconic experience center in Gothenburg, Sweden, that redefines large-scale timber construction while embodying the Scandinavian spirit. This landmark project—owned by Volvo Cars and Volvo Group—brings together the past, present, and future of a storied brand in a structure inspired by nature and tradition.
Timber and Construction
At its core, World of Volvo is built predominantly from wood, using advanced mass timber techniques. The structural framework features:
- Glulam Beams: These glue-laminated timber elements form the backbone of the building. Manufactured with computer-controlled precision—primarily in Austria—they enable the creation of striking, curved columns that resemble tree trunks.
- CLT Slabs: Cross-laminated timber floors and roof slabs, locally sourced, provide stability and a natural warmth throughout the structure.
The innovative timber construction not only meets rigorous load-bearing and sustainability standards but also pushes the boundaries of what’s possible in modern, organic architecture.
Architect, Builder, and Consultants
- Architect: The design is led by Henning Larsen Architects, whose visionary team (including Design Directors Søren Øllgaard and Martin Stenberg Ringnér) has translated Scandinavian traditions into a circular, nature-inspired form that embraces the ethos of “Allemansrätten” (the right to roam)
.
- Builder: Construction is managed by BRA Bygg, ensuring that the complex timber elements and glass façade are executed with precision.
- Consultants & Engineering Partners:
- Timber engineering, production, and installation were executed by WIEHAG GmbH.
- The facade and interior claddings were provided by Lindner Scandinavia.
- Structural engineering was performed by Optima Engineering and BRA Teknik.
- Additional expertise, such as accessibility, was supplied by consultants like Tyréns
.
Sustainability and Legacy
By integrating eco-friendly concrete for its support structure and using sustainably sourced wood, World of Volvo sets a new standard in sustainable design—earning LEED Gold and WELL Gold certifications. This project not only serves as a dynamic meeting place but also as a beacon for the future of timber construction.
