Gaia by Toyo Ito is a remarkable architectural achievement at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore. Designed by the renowned Japanese architect Toyo Ito in collaboration with local studio RSP Architects, Gaia is the largest wooden building in Asia. Constructed almost entirely from mass timber, this six-storey business school is named after the Greek goddess of Earth. The building features a unique design with two curving blocks, housing an auditorium, lecture theatres, seminar rooms, laboratories, offices, classrooms, and meeting spaces. Gaia is not only aesthetically pleasing but also environmentally friendly, achieving net-zero carbon in operation through renewable energy technologies and energy-efficient design.
Gaia is constructed using mass timber elements, specifically glued-laminated timber (glulam) for beams and columns, and cross-laminated timber (CLT) for floor slabs and solar shading. This combination of timber types allows for a strong, sustainable, and aesthetically pleasing structure.
