We believe that we need to take big steps to make good design more accessible to those who need it most, and we believe that step is industrialised manufacturing which can reduce the cost of housing while increasing the quality and the rate of production. We set out to prove that this is possible without compromising on design outcomes, and we are excited to help shape the future of the industry to make it more inclusive, reduce its environmental impact, and make the experience of building a house joyous, for our clients, our builders and our architects.
As an architect, every time I start a project, I want to make a building that delivers on the intricacies of a client’s brief – it is a machine designed for just the way they live, and it should also capture the essence of the site in the most meaningful way that the budget will allow. I want to know that the building I am making is the best possible response to those parameters and that it will delight and nurture its occupants for a significant part of their lives. Architects like any artist develop a set of values. These rules or priorities guide their decision-making, are legible in the building and can be appreciated by its audience – the occupant, a neighbour, a community, or the surrounding flora and fauna. A language develops that is distinct to that practice – a group of designers with aligned values. In every project, I am curious to witness how that language has evolved, and how the audience responds.
As a builder, I want to ensure that we are investing our time and energy into the most efficient system that can deliver on the promise of the design, and one that can easily scale and adapt to meet the demands and the diversity of future client briefs, site constraints, industry conditions, and societal shifts. I also want to know that we are building the most sensible and most affordable way possible without compromising on quality, health, and sustainability.
This is only possible in a collaborative environment where everyone is supported to contribute to the development of our projects and our systems.
Just as culture shapes language and language shapes culture, the lessons from our factory floor shape the thinking of our architects, our decisions are more grounded in pragmatism, innovation is more rapid and confident, and our values more legible.
